Why Hire Beyond a Resume?
19 years ago today the New England Patriots took a chance on the guy in this photo: Tom Brady.
On paper, he looked terrible.
Too short.
Too slow.
Etc etc.
Brady was selected by the New England Patriots with the 199th overall pick in the sixth round of 2000. In other words, close to dead last.
Since Brady became their starting qb in 2001, here’s what he helped the team accomplish since:
- They never had a losing season and have won 16 division titles.
- Won 6 Super Bowls
- 4x Super Bowl MVP
- 3x NFL Most Valuable Player
As the only quarterback to reach 200 regular-season wins, he’s the winningest quarterback in NFL history
My question to every hiring manager is this- are you going to rely only on a resume to gauge an “A player”?
Don’t look to hire someone for only who they are today but also who they can become later in your organization.
True leaders know how to turn someone with enthusiasm, discipline, character, and relentless drive into a champion.
