The government made an interesting move with AI this week. The White House assembled an AI Task Force with leaders from Amazon Facebook Ford Motor Company Intel Corporation and 34 others.

Regardless of your stance, it’s worth considering that we (Silicon Valley) need to better understand the role of government.

Fundamentally, business and government want the same thing; to add value to people’s lives.

Government’s role isn’t to commercialize new innovations. It’s to push technological advancements forward in areas that the markets can’t address alone. This isn’t just limited to the government as a partner, but also as a customer.

These kinds of relationships will be paramount for us to create meaningful policies that work towards making technology a tool that works for people and not against them.

To have an impact, we must recognize that influencing policy is key. In healthcare, there are only two people really footing the bill; insurance companies and the government.

If we ignore the government, a lot of governing will be done without us.

The discussion is worth the exercise.
