The weakness of any marketer is that they make a dogma of their craft. They make a cult of their inhibitions.

Today, being great at marketing is a lot like being great at fighting.

The best fighters in the world are not specialized in any one form. Thus, they’re called “Mixed Martial Artists” or MMA.

Of course every fighter as a preferred specialty such. as wrestling, jiujitsu, etc.

But all train to be “expert generalists”, meaning they have some knowledge of all styles.

This weekend’s record breaking fight saw lightweight champion Khabib land a solid punch on Connor McGregor.

Any boxing coach would have conditioned this move out of Khabib.

It’s sloppy, has a long route to connect, slightly overhanded. I could go on.

However, it worked.

Just as in fighting, as a marketer you don’t want to get caught up in being too much of a specialist.

Some classic marketers don’t like new style approaches around PR, copywriting, and content marketing.

However, there’s one thing you can’t argue-

They work.
